Interior Shutter Myths Debunked
Sunburst Shutters Tampa has dismantled a few shutter myths in the past. On our previous myth-busting trip, we looked at some of the most common misconceptions homeowners have regarding plantation shutters in Tampa.
This time, the Sunburst Shutters Tampa pros are back to set it straight on a couple more myths we’ve heard from homeowners in and around Florida. Let’s take a look.
Myth #1: “Plantation Shutters Only Work In Southern Homes.”
When some homeowners hear the phrase “plantation shutters,” they stick to the image of a huge, sprawling southern mansion surrounded by hills. Although it’s true that they are named for that particular place and time, plantation shutters were actually popular way before and way after 19th Century Southern America.
However, plantation shutters can give those exact same perks to any style of home. Craftsman style houses can utilize shutters, just as Tudor homes, Mid-Century Modern houses, and even cottage houses can.
Myth: “My Home Style Won’t Work With Shutters Is Too Eclectic For Shutters.”
Because plantation shutters have been used in so many houses and for such a long time, some homeowners might think that shutters can seem somewhat boring. A previous customer once told us that they thought that their home was “too eclectic” to use shutters, which was a tad confusing–since shutters are just about the only window treatment that can mesh with any style.
Myth #3: “Shutters And Blinds Are Basically The Same Thing.”
For some reason, there happens to be a lot of confusion over the difference between shutters and blinds. It might have to do with people confusing “louvers” and “slats,” or maybe there’s confusion because of their somewhat similar shapes. Either way, blinds and shutters really couldn’t be further apart on the window treatment spectrum. Here’s the basic breakdown of both.
The difference | Blinds | Shutters |
Are able to block out whole window134 | No | Yes |
Structure | Dangles from cord | Solid frame attached to window jamb |
Lifetime | Can wear down or deteriorate after 2-3 years. | Can usually last 20+ years. |
Permanent or temporary? | Temporary | Permanent |
Can they increase home value? | No | Yes |
Energy Efficiency | Minimal | Can block up to 50% of heat from the sun. |
Can they fit unique shape windows? | Can only fit rectangular windows. | Yes. |
What are the adjustable parts called? | Slats | Louvers |
Myth: “All window treatments offer basically the same energy efficiency.”
Like the “Blinds vs. Shutters” table above mentions, window treatments can differ tremendously on how energy efficient they are. The shape, material, and construction can all make a difference in how energy efficient a window treatment can be.
At the bottom rung of energy efficiency is leaving your window completely bare. Offering just a little more energy efficiency are your typical retail aluminum blinds. Up a little further on the spectrum are draperies and sturdy fabric window treatments. Getting into somewhat noticeable territory we have the majority of wood shutters and honeycomb shades, made to offer sun-blocking protection and temperature reduction. But dwarfing all of these other window treatments are Polywood plantation shutters, made to both reflect and block sunlight and outside heat from moving through your window.
